- Portland Green Parenting was formed with the vision of having like minded parents of young children come together to grow, learn and have fun around the theme of greening our lives (with just a little bit of peer pressure mixed in to help us achieve our goals). The idea was to inspire and learn from other parents on a similar journey, and to build lasting friendships for ourselves and our kids.
- There is no requirement to be at a certain level of "green" for joining us, just an interest in living sustainably and reducing our impact on the Earth that we all share, and a desire to pass these values on to our children. Our goals are to offer many diverse activities so we can get to know each other beyond the online forum, and form a real community.
- We value and respect diversity and equality. We believe in sharing opinions openly and without judgment, and to listen and respect the beliefs of others around us. We oppose discrimination in any form. We understand that it takes every individual to make this community successful, and strive to make our group welcoming and accessible. We encourage everyone to actively participate as both teacher and student.
- We strive to foster an environment where families of all sizes and types can find common ground in doing what is right, healthy, and safe for our children. Many of us subscribe to the Attachment Parenting philosophy and believe children should be treated with respect. We advocate breastfeeding, co-sleeping, babywearing, and being in tune with our children's needs so that they can grow up into beautiful compassionate adults.
- We respect the environment. We recycle. We are interested in ridding our homes of toxic plastics and chemicals. We prefer organic, minimally processed foods. We prefer to buy from local, earth-friendly businesses, and to support local, organic agriculture. We support fair trade options where we can, and avoid products that exploit others. We seek to be responsible consumers, and believe in educating ourselves about the choices that are available to us when spending our money.
- We welcome all who respect these values!
