Beginning January 12, Tiny Talkers will offer a new music and sign language program called Sign & Sing. This research-proven program is based on methods shown to speed language development in hearing children, ease frustration, and enhance long-term learning abilities.
Shira Fogel, a Kindermusik Educator, baby sign language specialist and owner of Tiny Talkers, is teaching the program created exclusively for Kindermusik by leading experts in sign language for hearing children: Signing Smart Inc. This new class combines songs and playful interaction to help children learn American Sign Language.
“Instinctively your baby reaches up when she wants to be held, and you instinctively pick her up and sway and sing to soothe her,” says Fogel. “Sign & Sing helps you see these moments happening every day in your life and gives you the language to improve that communication, and strengthen the bond between you and your child.”
The five-session class gives parents the tools to learn more than 50 American Sign Language signs for children ages 6 months to approximately 2 ½ years. Fogel will teach signs such as “help,” “change,” “bed,” “where,” and “thank you.”
The class experience also includes a DVD, a set of clip-on flashcards of American Sign Language that features photos of both a parent and a child making the signs. Also included is a booklet of activities for parents and their children to learn and play with at home. The 5 week class will be offered at The Warehouse (a project of Portland Green Parenting) starting January 12 from 9:45-10:30. The Warehouse is located at 3434 SE Milwaukie Ave., Portland OR 97202.
“One of the best ways to draw a child into learning sign language is through what they love: songs and play,” says Carol Penney, Kindermusik’s Manager of Curriculum Development. “Who better to teach that than a Kindermusik Educator?”

Know Thy Food is a food buying club that operates once a week out of the back space at "The Warehouse" in the Brooklyn neighborhood. We now have over 450 members! It is a not-for-profit collaborative effort where we work directly with local, organic food producers and distributors to bring healthy food to families at affordable prices. KTF is the first food buying club in Portland to accept SNAP benefits (food stamps) and make farm-direct high quality food available to everyone! By eliminating the retail middle man, we strive to both pay the farmers we work with a fair price AND also save money over retail store prices. It's hard work, but very gratifying to know exactly where our food comes from, who produced it, how far it's traveled, and of course to know that we are feeding our families the freshest and most nutrient dense foods. Our mission is to continue making high quality foods and other goods available to families at fair prices; helping to sustain our families and communities, and foster a healthy, vibrant local food economy.
Right now we are planning our 1 Year Anniversary Celebration and grassroots fundraising campaign, and we need support from other environmentally and socially conscious businesses in the area in order to bring our vision to reality. Please consider a donation to our upcoming auction on Sunday, June 5th. Your business name will be prominently displayed with any item donated. Those who donate items valued at $100 or more will be listed in The Warehouse newsletter, which is sent to over 500 environmentally-minded people who want to support our local economy. Any funds raised will go to improving our space and ensuring we can continue serving as many families as possible who want to support local organic agriculture.
We are hoping to create themed gift baskets, and are hoping you might consider donating a gift certificate or an item for the basket. Thanks so much for your consideration.

The Portland Growers Alliance is a new social enterprise helping beginning and refugee farmers to market and distribute their produce.
We are a collaborative effort between Mercy Corps Northwest’s New American Agriculture Project and Grow Portland, a new grassroots urban agriculture organization. Through this unique program, we are working to:
- contribute to the local food economy,
- promote ecological growing practices,
- utilize vacant urban land for productive purposes,
- harness the skills and potential of refugee and beginning growers
The Growers Alliance currently features the produce of beginning and refugee farmers supported by Mercy Corps Northwest. Our food is grown at sites in Portland and Damascus using organic practices and no sprays or synthetic chemicals
Where to find our produce:
Consider joining our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. CSA is a direct market connection between farmers and “shareholders.” Shareholders pay their farmer a set amount before the season begins, and in return they receive fresh and seasonal vegetables all season long. Read more about what CSA is here .
The Growers Alliance CSA program began in 2010, and we’re looking to expand for 2011! Check out the projected crop availability for our 2011 CSA boxes.
Our season runs from May 23-November 28, and we offer full and half size shares. Our vegetables are grown using organic practices and no sprays or synthetic chemicals. Shareholders can pick up a box of fresh produce every Monday afternoon at Mercy Corps Northwest’s office in Old Town or Thursdays in the Sellwood/Brooklyn neighborhood area (stay tuned for exact location!). Each week, shareholders receive an email with recipes, storage techniques, and background information on the vegetable varieties in their box.

For families and neighbors in the Brooklyn Neighborhood!
Be Academy and the Brooklyn Action Corps are spearheading a community gardens project that is officially underway. For those of you with learners at 'Be', this opportunity opens up a huge forum for exploration. The Gardens will be an educational tool and a community gathering point for all of us. We will be able to establish our own plot that the school and it's members can cultivate, learn in, share in, and eat from.
We are in the formative stages. That is, a committee is being formed and will begin the organization of the project starting this Saturday morning 1/29 at 11AM. It will be held at the Warehouse Cafe, 3434 SE Milwaukie Ave, Portland, OR 97202.
This meeting will be to inform those attending of the details of the project and to assess who is interested in being a part of the committee. To be a committee member, one has to live or work in the Brooklyn neighborhood. If you want to be a participant and you live in our hood, step in! Now is the time to have fun, work, and voice your ideas of what you'd like to see happen here. We will be planting in the spring!
If you can't make it to the meeting and want involvement, e-mail me soon.
Thanks to all of you. Here is to the Harvest!
