FAQ

Why should I select organic cotton clothing and toys for my child?
Conventional cotton contains pesticide residues as well as many chemicals used in the finishing of the cotton. These dangerous pesticides can end up on your baby's skin through direct contact with the clothes she wears and toys she mouths, and can absorbed into the body. Not only does conventional cotton negatively impact the health of children, but it also seriously affects our environment. Cotton pesticides contaminate our ground and surface water. Birds are killed from aerial spraying, and fish are killed from pesticides polluting streams and rivers.

How does UTN make the colors for the dyes?
UTN dyes their yarn and material with colors that are free of heavy metals and harmful chemicals, in accordance with Demeter standard. UTN dyes do not contain PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride). PVC is a dangerous chemical used in the conventional dyeing process and has been shown to cause kidney failure, developmental delays, and even hearing loss in children. UTN aim to only use agent's and processes that are environmentally sound and ensure the highest quality standard.

Does UTN use bleach to get the white color?
No, UTN does not use bleach. Sometimes the cotton harvest of a particular year is more on the yellow side. To achieve the white color, UTN only applies a natural whitening process using peroxide.

Does UTN use chemical finishing on the fabrics?
No, UTN does not use chemical finishing on their fabrics. One of the most dangerous chemicals found in the finishing of conventional fabrics is Formaldehyde. Babies and children are very sensitive to this chemical. It can cause skin rashes, coughing, and flu-like symptoms in children wearing clothes finished with it.

What kind of detergent should I use on organic cotton?
Use a detergent that does not contain chlorine, phosphates, dyes, or phenols-- just all natural ingredients. There are many brands, however, UTN recommends "Seventh Generation". This company is reputable and has been on the market for a long time.

Does UTN use flame retardant on the products?
No, UTN does not use flame retardant on any of our products. All of our long johns meet Federal Safety Commission requirements for sleep wear and are made to be fit snugly to ensure safety.

How can customers be sure they are receiving Certified Organic Cotton?
All of the UTN products carry the "Demeter" certified logo. This ensures that customers are purchasing a certified organic cotton product. If a product says "natural," "pure," or "green," this does not mean that is Certified Organic. This usually means that no toxins, dyes, bleaches or finishings were added to conventional cotton. There are, however, no regulations governing the meaning of these terms.
